eBook Description: In 1948 Los Angeles, Detective Mike O'Neal is a handsome cop whose world is changed forever after his squad raids Sugartown, a happening nightclub just off the beaten path. During the bust he watches helplessly as sultry blues singer Bettie Bleue is cut down by a stray bullet. After rushing her to the hospital, he can't bring himself to leave her bedside. When she awakens, he decides to never leave her side at all. But wooing Bad Bettie has its complications. She's a bit flashy and hard to figure out for a straight arrow like the detective. Her sexy job and curvy build provoke beefs with the sort of men who don't take no for an answer. And having most of society against their love ain't a picnic, either.

She sat up, and he quickly extended his hand. Their bodies collided as she climbed unsteadily to her feet. He was enveloped by her ample curves and feminine scent. He was bigger and stronger, but she surrounded him. Her bosom nuzzled his chest, soft flesh peaked by hard nipples. When she pulled away, he stifled a groan. He watched her take her belongings from the bedside drawer and the closet. Without a backward glance, she disappeared inside the bathroom. I guess it's time for me to go. That would be the most reasonable move for him to make. But something unreasonable had been awakened in him, something that wanted to keep him planted exactly where he was. Mike slumped into the chair. The least he could do was give her a ride home. He didn't like the idea of her trying to catch a taxi this late at night. And, though he could always see to it that a call was placed to a friend or family member, the thought of making her wait seemed criminal. That meant she was stuck with him.
