1 Schrodinger's Kitten
by George Alec Effinger
Jehan nervously awaits the dawn in a dark alley, watching for the boy she knows will assault her, unsure if she will use the dagger in her sleeve ... this decision will determine which of the many futures from her visions will come to pass. Life on the streets as a defiled woman ... beheading in the public square ... or assistant to the German physicist who buys her life from the executioner's sword. 1988 Hugo Award Winner, Sturgeon Award Winner, Nebula Award(R) Winner

Words: 9727 - Reading Time: 27-38 min.
Category: Science Fiction

Schrodinger's Kitten is a spectacular dance with the question of how much can rest on one fateful decision in one moment of time. The choice the protagonist faces--whether or not to meet a potential rapist with dagger drawn--is at first glance a simple one. In Effinger's world, though, nothing is that simple. A dizzying series of visions highlight how much of her future--and the future of others--rests on her choice. I was spellbound watching her struggle with the knowledge of what was at stake, and then making her choice.

2 Absolute Receptiveness, The Princess, And The Pea
by Vera Nazarian
She came in from the rain, a delicate pure thing of feminine beauty and refinement. And now things will never be the same again for one disfuctional royal family. An erotic dark fantasy retelling of the familiar fairytale The Princess and the Pea, told from the point of view of the young, sensually obsessed Prince. 2000

Words: 6665 - Reading Time: 19-26 min.
Category: Fantasy

This story was an enjoyable twist on the old story of the princess and the pea. It's an uncomfortable story, with uncomfortable implications, but that is, after all, the point. Parts of the story are quite graphically explicit so this is not one for the faint of heart, but if you don't mind an exploration of the darker side of human nature, this is an excellent read.

3 Gather Blue Roses
by Pamela Sargent
In this early story, only the third published by Sargent but among her most reprinted (it appears in both Jack Dann's Wandering Stars and Ursula K. Le Guin's Norton Book of Science Fiction), an empath in retreat from the world recalls her childhood and her discovery of her power--or affliction. 1971

Words: 2181 - Reading Time: 6-8 min.
Category: Science Fiction

"Gather Blue Roses" portrays what it is to be an Empath--one able to experience, in a very real and direct way, the pain and anger and fear of others. When Sargent alludes to the horror of Nazi concentration camps, one can imagine only too well what it would be like for someone with the gift--or curse--of Empathy to be thrust into such a place. A poignant, powerful read from a very talented author.

4 Sympathy for Zombies
by John Gregory Betancourt
She came to the island to forget her ex-husband after a messy divorce, never guessing that he would follow ... with a voodoo revenge on his mind! [This short fiction piece is also available in the collection: Sympathy for Monsters] 2000

Words: 1110 - Reading Time: 3-4 min.
Category: Horror

In "Sympathy For Zombies," John Gregory Betancourt shows his readers that sometimes the best laid plans can backfire in strange and unintended ways. A man's plan for revenge against the woman who dumped him blows up in his face--with chilling consequences. A short but suspenseful story, "Sympathy for Zombies" was a quick and enjoyable read for me.

5 Destiny
by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
A rarity--a short story written in Rusch's popular Fey universe. "Destiny" is a prequel to the Fey novels. The shape-shifter Solanda must choose between an enemy's child and going to war. 2000

Words: 9169 - Reading Time: 26-36 min.
Category: Fantasy

I've not read the novels which are set in this universe, but I found "Destiny" to be an engaging and enjoyable fantasy. The story is set in a world of magic, where Shapeshifters serve as spies for the invading Fey army. But when the child in whose home Solanda is dwelling has an encounter with a Fey princess, Solanda decides to try to take the girl to a place where she can be a child. Ultimately, Solanda learns about destiny and choices, and the choice she must make is a difficult one indeed.

6 Originals
by Pamela Sargent
Lora lives in a world of unlimited wealth, where people can have any material possessions they want, and has gained her social position by entertaining guests in her home with dishes prepared by her chef, dishes that are unique and served nowhere else. But now an unknown thief is stealing her chef's recipe disks; Lora must find out who the thief is or risk social ruin in this humorous science fiction mystery. 1985

Words: 8165 - Reading Time: 23-32 min.
Category: Science Fiction

In a world where recycling has been taken to an extreme, a high-society lady makes a name for herself with a chef who can create--using the "duplicator"--amazing dishes that only she can serve. But when his "dishes" start turning up in other places besides her home, she must figure out who's stealing them. I found "Originals" to be a light-hearted and enjoyable mystery, full of humor and not a little suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

7 The Elephants on Neptune
by Mike Resnick
A spaceship from Earth arrives on Neptune in the 25th century, and the human adventurers are surprised to find themselves engaged in a spirited conversation with the planet's pachyderm inhabitants. As the discussions focus on the unfortunate history of man's behavior toward the extinct elephants of Earth, the conceited humans are unaware of the Neptunian phenomenon triggered by their arrival. 2000 Hugo Award Nominee, Asimov's Reader's Choice Award Winner, HOMer Award Winner, Nebula Award(R) Finalist

Words: 3930 - Reading Time: 11-15 min.
Category: Science Fiction

Though I don't often read science fiction, this story captivated me. Mike Resnick has taken a simple concept--that killing is part of human nature--and twisted it into a pretzel. The result is an amusing and though-provoking story, full of rich scenery and characters and elephants that become human. "The Elephants on Neptune" is an Asimov's Readers Choice award winner, and was nominated for both Hugo and Nebula awards.

9 Not With a Bang
by Damon Knight
The last man on Earth courts the last woman. Damon Knight wrote that this was the ninth story he published, very early in his career, and the first one that he considered to be at a professional level. 1949

Words: 1926 - Reading Time: 5-7 min.
Category: Science Fiction

What if an apocalypse had destroyed all life on earth, save for one man and one woman? What if the future of humankind rested on that man's ability to court that woman? These are the questions Damon Knight tackles in this story, and he does so in signature style. I could easily see the characters in my mind, and the surprise ending was both amusing and tragic. This was the first story of Knight's that I've read, and I enjoyed it immensely.

"Models" was my introduction to the writing of Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Her mysteries are rich with suspense and drama and set amid vivid backdrops. "Models" sets a murder in the glamor and image world of fashion modelling, where nothing is ever as it seems. "Models" was an Ellery Queen Magazine Reader's Choice nominee.

12 Scars
by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
A woman who was burned and disfigured in an auto accident musters the courage to join a local gym and swim for exercise, revealing her scars to other people. She never suspected that a simple day of swimming would lead her to be caught up in a murder investigation.

Words: 10726 - Reading Time: 30-42 min.
Category: Mystery/Crime

Many of Kristine Kathryn Rusch's main characters are in some way "different". The protagonist in "Scars" bears the marks left by a fire which killed her husband and child. It is these scars, and their aftermath, that place her in the position to discover a murder victim--and to unmask the murderer. Like most of Rusch's work, "Scars" is fast-paced and exciting and full of suspense. If you're looking for an action-packed read and vivid, rich characters, "Scars" is an excellent choice.
